Brain power or wisdom (29 October 2023)

(Igniting Insights by Rev. Dr. J. N. Manokaran)

Andy Frisella introduced “Ironman for your brain” to test “mental toughness,” and promote a food supplement.  A 75 Hard Challenge which includes following a strict diet with no alcohol nor cheat meals, participating in two workouts per day, and consuming a gallon of water daily for 75 days.  Michelle Fairburn began the 75 Hard challenge and in two weeks it landed her in the hospital.  The doctor diagnosed her with a severe sodium deficiency, hyponatremia, a life-threatening disease after chugging a gallon of water every day for 12 days.  A gallon of water is 16 cups.  The recommended intake is about 15 cups for men and 11 cups for women.  (New York Post, 26 July 2023)

Brain power?  People like to have brain power.  High intelligence, reasoning power, analytic skills, strategic thinking, pattern discerning, quick responses, and strong memory.  High Intelligence Quotient, High emotional quotient, and High relational quotient are pursued by ambitious young people to be leaders in their workplaces and communities.  To achieve this, they wish to go for the 75 Hard Challenge but may end up in hospital or on a deathbed.

Wisdom:  People need wisdom, not just intelligence or smartphone-enabled intelligence.  Wisdom is the capacity to see, observe, and understand life from God’s perspective.  The Bible exhorts to get wisdom that is more precious than gold.  (Proverbs 4:5; 16:16)

God’s Wisdom:  The earthly wisdom is jealous, selfish, unspiritual, and demonic, while divine wisdom is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, good fruits, impartial, and sincere.  (James 3:15-17)

Getting wisdom:  First, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.  (Proverbs 9:10) It is like that of a child that fears parents, in order not to offend them, not a fear of a slave looking at a master or executioner.  Second, to desire and seek wisdom like a hidden treasure, with all heart, soul, and mind.  (Proverbs 2:4) Third, those who lack or have a sense of the inadequacy of wisdom, should ask God in prayer. (James 1:5) Fourth, read, study, memorize, and meditate on the Word of God. (Psalms 1:1-3; 19:7)

Am I satisfied with intelligence or seek wisdom?
