Dream Killers?

Dream Killers (30 October 2020)

(Daily Devotions by Rev. Dr. J.N. Manokaran)

God gave Joseph dreams, revealing him of his future.  However, his brothers were not happy about the dream, as well as the interpretation of the dreams.  Hence, they hated Joseph.  When Jacob sent Joseph to provide food and get information about their welfare, they counseled with one another.  They decided to kill the dreamer so that dreams would not become a reality.  (Genesis 37:19-20) Spiritual downward journey of brothers.

1) Upset and angry: Joseph brothers had a question: “Why he gets dreams?”  Why not others who are older are not getting any dream.  Human nature is to be upset when someone excels in one way or the other.

2) Envy:  Upset people tend to brood over these non-issues and get obsessed with that.  Joseph’s brothers allowed their anger to become ‘envy’ against Joseph.  This is dangerous spiritual sickness that could lead to worser maladies.

3) Hate:  Already, they hated Joseph because Jacob showed special favour to him by providing colourful apparel. (Genesis 37:3) After they heard Joseph’s dream and his words, they hated him more.  (Genesis 37:8)

4) Conspiracy and Violence: Upset, envious brothers filled with hatred conspired to kill the dream by killing the dreamer.  They threw him in a pit, later pulled him out and sold him as slave for twenty pieces of silver. (Genesis 37:28)

Brothers did not know that Joseph was just the receptor of the dream, while originator was God.  It was not Joseph’s imagination, but divine revelation.  Brothers of Joseph did not have discernment.  By fighting against dream and dreamer, they were fighting against God.  In God’s providence, He used wickedness of Joseph’s brothers to propel Joseph to fulfill his plan by going to Egypt.

Even today God gives visions and dreams to His people, young and old. (Joel 2:28) There are people who wish to kill visions, dreams and people who receive them today.  There are few who are lazy and not willing to pay the price, kill their own dreams and visions.

Do I pursue God-given vision and dream?
