Prosperity to Worldliness

Prosperity to worldliness (25 June 2019)

(A daily devotion from Rev. Dr. J.N. Manokaran)

Lot was with Abraham, when he left Haran to fulfil God’s call to a new unknown destination.

Prosperity made them separate as they could not be together. Vision could keep them together, but not prosperity.  Abraham provides an opportunity to Lot to choose and separate.  Lot chooses more prosperity and goes away from Abraham.  Unlike Abraham who trusted God to proceed for an unknown destination, Lot chose to trust his eyes, mind that saw only riches of the region of Sodom and Gomorrah but had no spiritual insight.  Lot as city dweller must have thought that he was better off than Abraham camping in tents, pious and obedient to God, whom Lot did not know.

Without influence of godly uncle Abraham; Lot’s daughters grew up in a culture that was sinful, rebellious and disobedient to all moral laws.  After losing their mother, the two daughters were afraid, helpless and hopeless.  Cultural influence was heavy upon them, they decided to lie with their drunkard father and have children.  They had sons who became Moabites and Ammonites.  (Genesis 19: 34-38) While Abraham children were blessed, Moabites and Ammonites were cursed.

Both Abraham and Lot began from the same place, journeyed together and had many shared experiences, but their ends were different.  Lot died as miserable man and his descendants were cursed.  Abraham descendants became a nation, and through that Nation the Messiah was revealed to the world.  Lot choice of prosperity and not God’s will lead him on a downward spiral.  Abraham chose obedience that was perpetually rewarded.

Is prosperity more attractive than Lord Jesus Christ?
