Right or ‘Rights’

Right or ‘Rights’

J.N. Manokaran

The debate in the world has gone from the question: “What is right?” to “This is my right?” This downward plunge will lead the world into moral and spiritual chaos. A classical example of this is the giving legal sanction to homosexual marriage in USA by the Supreme Court of the nation. How can a so-called Christian nation, de facto moral police of the world do this. Religious leaders across several nations and variety of religion are shocked at this move.

Righteousness is important aspect of personal life, family life, social life and national life. Without moral values and righteous practice, any nation could become anarchy. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34) Right thinking, right attitude and right behaviour springs from God who is the creator of human race. Since, man is created in the image of God, there is a deep longing, desire, yearning and struggling to be like Him in holiness. Humans generally believed there is a God, absolute morals and should strive live according to some standards. However, the authority of God was always challenged by humans who did not want to repent, confess, forsake sin. The idea of morality, virtue, righteousness was based on God as Sovereign ruler, Creator and Judge of humanity. Nevertheless, for over a century this basis was challenged and counter ideas bombarded the core belief.

Biblical Worldview challenged

God as the creator was challenged by Charles Darwin. His theory was that the world and all the living beings evolved. Though a theory, it was devotedly believed and accepted by many. In fact, it was a great spiritual deception, using science as tool. It takes much more faith and effort to believe in evolution than to believe in a creator. When there is no creator, humans exist without purpose in life. Hence, life has no meaning. That paved way for materialism, consumerism and even hedonism. Living for the present, enjoying life and pursuing all earthly, carnal desires become way of life.

Carl Marx declared that the God has been exiled. There is no God who is also the Sovereign ruler. Humans have the capacity to rule, order and regulate human life. There is ‘No Job’ for God as humans are competent enough to manage their affairs. Human race has broken free from the bondage of God. “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,  against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,  “Let us burst their bonds apart  and cast away their cords from us.” (Psalms 2:2-3) The result is that there are no rules, structures or strictures. Humans would create their own laws and govern with those laws. There are no divine laws or guidance, humans would decide what is right or wrong.

Sigmund Freud was another person who taught the world that there is no accountability. Humans have to fulfill their desires, fantasies and imaginations. “For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.” (Romans 1:26-27) There should be nor restraint. In other words, there is Judgment Day or a Judge to make human beings accountable. Since, there is no external regulation or law; there is no need of implementers of law or judges to punish those who violate the law.

The three basic foundations for life were challenged: 1) There is no God the creator – so life has no meaning; 2) There is no God the Sovereign ruler – so no laws, no rules and nor regularions and 3) There is no God who is the Judge – we are accountable to none.

Selfishness reigns

With these three foundational principles, challenged something has to replace these three. Instead of creator God, an individual becomes god for himself. Hence, he has to create a purpose or meaning for life. There are many choices too. Pursuing what I desire, or like or want becomes life purpose. Saving blue whales or tigers or street dogs could become my life purpose. Amassing wealth, becoming famous, driving yachts or SUVs could become life purpose of life.

Instead of God as Sovereign ruler, an individual becomes his own ruler or master. Therefore, the individual could frame his own laws, regulations and live according to that. No external force – God or society or government could question them. Humans become gods in their own domain. A person has right to define what is marriage, love as just chemistry, sex as casual…etc.

When God is not the Judge, an individual is not at all accountable to any person. In other words, he is god himself and only accountable to himself. As god an individual becomes sole authority, law and judge. Hence no one has right to judge his motives or behaviour. If anyone, criticizes or comments, that individual is hurt. Even criticisms could become hate crime.

Chaos and Crises

When people are not willing to ask: What is right? Instead prefer to do asserting: This is my right, the result is moral chaos and social crises. Here, let us take the issue of homosexual marriage and evaluate. First, God has designed and defined marriage between a man and woman for the purpose of Pleasure, Procreation and Partnership. When individual reject as God as creator, marriage could be redefined and infuse new meaning. Homosexual marriage redefines marriage and gives new purpose.

Second, God as Sovereign ruler has definite laws, regulations and standards. When individuals reject God, they have to frame their own rules and regulations. It need for be derived from rational mind, but from my emotions. My feeling is the yardstick for my law. This is a subjective experience and cannot be objectively examined or evaluated and should not be tested by others. An individual is sovereign and he designs his own rules. According to this self-sovereign law, homosexual union is right.

Third, God is judge and he makes human as moral beings accountable to him. When an individual becomes his own judge, he will not punish himself. In other words, all his decisions or his judgments that are correct. Pleasure and unnatural sex in homosexual union becomes normal and natural for those who are only accountable to themselves.

Famine for the Word

Amos warns about the famine for the Word of God. “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.  They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,  but they shall not find it.” (Amos 8:11,12) Printed bibles and electronic bibles are avaialable and accessible in plenty. However, there is clear teaching from the Word of God. Deceptive ideas from Satan is left unchallenged. Those deceptive ideas have taken mind of people captive. As Christians, let us become teachers of the Word of God to perishing humanity.
